Double knitting

nounStandard termTextiles

A technique that simultaneously produces two layers of knitted fabric on a single pair of needles.

Double knitting is an advanced construction method where the knitter alternates working stitches for a front fabric and a back fabric across the same row. By manipulating two colors of yarn, the knitter creates a thick, reversible textile with inverted color patterns on each side and no exposed floats. It is highly valued for producing extra-warm winter accessories like scarves and cowls that look perfectly finished from any angle.

Heard on the job

I'm using double knitting for the scarf so the colorwork is completely reversible and twice as warm.

Insider tip

Keep both yarns held to the back when knitting the front stitch, and both to the front when purling the back stitch, to ensure the layers do not accidentally lock together.
