Frogging

nounShop talkTextiles

The process of intentionally ripping out stitches in knitting or crochet to fix a mistake.

The act of unraveling a knitted or crocheted project by pulling the working yarn to undo multiple rows or rounds at once. It is done to correct a structural error, gauge issue, or pattern mistake that cannot be fixed by dropping a single stitch. The term is a play on words, referencing a frog's croak of 'rip it, rip it.'

Heard on the job

I realized my cable crossed the wrong way ten rows back, so I have to do some serious frogging tonight.

Insider tip

When frogging complex patterns, insert a lifeline thread through a row of correct stitches before ripping, so the unraveling stops safely at a known good point.
