UE

abbreviationStandard termTelecom & IT

The end-user device that connects to a cellular network base station.

User Equipment. In 3GPP cellular standards like UMTS, LTE, and 5G, this refers to any device used directly by an end customer to communicate. It encompasses the radio hardware, the SIM card, and the software stack. Network engineers use this term instead of "phone" because a UE can just as easily be a cellular modem, a connected car, or an industrial IoT sensor.
