Wireless internet

nounStandard termTelecom & IT

A broadband connection delivered over cellular radio networks rather than physical cables.

This service provides data connectivity to homes and businesses using 4G or 5G cellular bands instead of fiber or coaxial lines. A fixed receiver at the customer premises captures the cellular signal and routes it to a local network router. It serves as a primary access method in rural areas or places where running physical lines is cost-prohibitive.

Heard on the job

The customer canceled their DSL and switched to wireless internet since the 5G tower is right down the road.

Insider tip

Do not confuse this with local Wi-Fi. Wireless internet refers to the wide-area connection from the provider to the premises, not the local network inside the building.
