WAP

abbreviationStandard termTelecom & IT

An early technical standard for accessing information over a mobile wireless network.

Wireless Application Protocol (WAP) is a legacy suite of network protocols that allowed basic mobile phones to access stripped-down internet content. It routes requests through a WAP gateway that translates standard HTTP traffic into a compressed format suitable for low-bandwidth cellular connections. It was largely superseded by full HTML browsers on smartphones.
