Spectral gating

nounStandard termTelecom & IT

A digital signal processing method that reduces background noise by muting specific frequency bands.

This audio cleanup technique converts a time-domain signal into a frequency-domain spectrogram to isolate constant background noise. The software establishes a noise floor threshold for individual frequency bins. When the signal in a specific bin drops below its designated threshold, the algorithm attenuates or mutes that frequency, leaving the desired audio intact.

We need to apply spectral gating to this interview tape to pull the HVAC hum out of the background.
