Rubber

verbShop talkTelecom & IT

To eavesdrop on a telephone conversation without the participants knowing.

In older telephony, this means to silently listen in on a party line or an active circuit. Technicians and operators sometimes did this to check line quality or out of curiosity. The practice requires lifting a receiver or bridging a connection without introducing noise that would alert the callers.
