Radio-frequency identification (RFID) is a wireless technology that uses radio waves to read and capture information stored on a tag attached to an object. A complete system consists of a scanning antenna, a transceiver, and a transponder. Passive tags draw their power from the interrogating radio waves, while active tags contain their own battery, allowing them to broadcast their ID over much longer distances. It is heavily used in access control, inventory tracking, and toll collection.
