Reperforator

nounStandard termTelecom & IT

A historic teletypewriter machine component that punches incoming messages onto paper tape.

A reperforator receives electrical telegraph signals and automatically punches the corresponding holes into a continuous paper tape. This allowed operators to store incoming messages physically and feed them into a transmitter later, effectively creating a mechanical store-and-forward routing system for telegraph networks.

The night shift operator left a massive coil of tape coming out of the reperforator for us to route this morning.
