Shackle

nounStandard termShop Slang

A load-bearing metal loop closed by a removable pin, used in rigging.

Riggers and crane operators use this heavy-duty connecting link to attach lifting slings, wire ropes, or chains to a load. The most common type is the bow or anchor style, which features a threaded clevis pin that secures the open end. Because they bear the entire weight of suspended loads, they must be inspected for wear and deformation before every lift.

Heard on the job

Put a three-ton shackle on that lifting eye and make sure the pin is seated all the way.

Insider tip

Always back the pin off a quarter turn after tightening it; if a load shifts and binds the pin, you will never get it unscrewed if it was already bottomed out.
