Wye

verbStandard termRailroad

To turn a locomotive or an entire train around by navigating a triangular junction of track.

Crews execute this maneuver by driving the equipment forward up one leg of a track triangle, throwing the switch, and reversing down the other leg. This changes the physical facing direction of the equipment without requiring a turntable. It is a routine procedure for single-cab locomotives or passenger consists that must be pointed in the correct direction for their return trip.
