A dangerous defect on early railroads where an iron strap rail curled upward.

An historic track hazard from the era of strap-iron rails, where the iron strip would break loose from its wooden base and curl upward under the weight of passing wheels. The curled metal could pierce the wooden floor of a passenger car, causing severe injuries or derailments.
