Running shed

nounStandard termRailroad

A facility where locomotives are serviced, fueled, and prepared for their next assignment.

A covered maintenance building dedicated to the daily servicing and light repair of motive power. Mechanics perform routine inspections, top off fluids, replace brake shoes, and clear minor faults here. It is distinct from a heavy backshop, as locomotives are expected to enter and leave a running shed quickly to maintain fleet availability.
