Replacing switch

nounStandard termRailroad

A heavy metal ramp temporarily clamped to the rails to guide derailed wheels back onto the track.

A specialized set of portable steel castings used by carmen and train crews to rerail a piece of rolling stock that has dropped a wheel off the railhead. The devices are spiked or clamped to the ties and rail so that when the locomotive pulls the derailed car, the wheels climb the ramp and drop back onto the running rail.
