Mail car

nounStandard termRailroad

A specialized passenger-train car designed for sorting and carrying mail en route.

A piece of rolling stock formerly used by postal services to transport and sort mail while moving. These cars were equipped with sorting racks, pigeonholes, and a mail hook to catch bags on the fly. Clerks worked inside during the run to ensure mail was ready for dispatch at the next station.

Heard on the job

We picked up a restored mail car for the heritage fleet, but the sorting racks were completely stripped out.
