Jim Crow

nounShop talkRailroad

A heavy, manual screw press used by track gangs to bend rails.

A massive, U-shaped steel tool with hooks on both ends and a large threaded screw in the center. Track workers hook it onto a rail and tighten the center screw against the web to physically bend or straighten the steel. While hydraulic rail benders have largely replaced it, the manual version is still found in track toolhouses for small alignment jobs.

Grab the Jim Crow from the truck so we can put a slight curve in this closure rail before we spike it.

Insider tip

Because of the immense tension on the screw, operators must keep their bodies clear of the handle in case it snaps back.
