Helper grade

nounStandard termRailroad

A section of track steep enough to require additional locomotives to push or pull trains over the summit.

A mountain pass or steep incline where standard train consists lack the horsepower or tractive effort to climb unassisted. Railroads station extra locomotives at the base of these grades to attach to passing trains, ensuring they do not stall on the hill and block the mainline.

Heard on the job

We stalled out on the helper grade because the rail was wet and the sanders clogged.
