Fourth rail

nounStandard termRailroad

An additional electrified rail used for traction current return.

A specialized track component in certain electrified transit systems that provides a dedicated return path for electrical current. Instead of grounding the return voltage through the running rails, the system uses a separate, insulated center rail. This prevents stray electrical currents from eroding cast-iron tunnel linings or interfering with track circuits.

Heard on the job

The track gang needs to clear the fourth rail before we can restore power to the section.
