A specific type of electronic beacon fastened to the ties between the rails as part of the European Train Control System. When a train passes over it, an antenna under the locomotive energizes the passive device, which then transmits precise location data, speed limits, or signal aspects back to the train's onboard computer. They provide absolute position reference points to correct the train's internal odometer.
