The European Rail Traffic Management System (ERTMS) is a standardized digital command and control framework designed to replace dozens of incompatible legacy signaling systems across European railways. It uses continuous communication between the track and the train to supervise speed and braking. While strictly European, North American signaling engineers study it closely when developing domestic positive train control architectures.
The new corridor is being built to ERTMS Level 2 standards, so we won't need trackside signals.
