Cupola

nounStandard termRailroad

A raised observation enclosure on the roof of a traditional caboose.

A small, windowed box protruding from the roof of a caboose that allowed the conductor and rear brakeman to visually inspect the train while it was in motion. From this elevated perch, the crew could watch for smoke from hot boxes, shifted loads, or derailed cars ahead of them.

Heard on the job

The rear brakeman rode the cupola all the way down the grade to watch for dragging equipment.
