To compose a block of text that immediately precedes another block previously set by the same compositor.

An older typesetting practice where a compositor sets a section of text that connects directly to another section they have already composed. In a busy shop where long manuscripts were divided among multiple workers, doing this ensured exact consistency in spacing, hyphenation, and typographic style across the joined sections.
