Jet

nounStandard termPrinting

The excess metal attached to the bottom of a freshly cast piece of type.

The sprue or waste piece of lead alloy that forms in the channel where molten metal enters the type mold. Once the metal cools and the type is ejected, this excess tail must be broken off and the bottom planed smooth so the type stands perfectly flat at type-high.

Heard on the job

Make sure the caster is breaking the jet off cleanly or the sorts will wobble in the stick.
