Lean

adjectiveShop talkPrinting

Describing text or copy that is difficult and slow to set by hand.

An older term for manuscript copy or type that requires extensive time and effort to compose, resulting in lower piece-rate pay for the typesetter. This typically involves dense text, complex tabular data, or foreign languages with unusual characters. Compositors dreaded these assignments because they yielded fewer completed lines per hour compared to standard text.
