Color separation

nounStandard termPrinting

The prepress process of dividing a full-color image into individual primary color channels for printing.

The prepress workflow step that splits a continuous-tone color image into four distinct channels representing cyan, magenta, yellow, and black. Each channel is then used to generate a separate printing plate. On the press, these plates lay down overlapping halftone dots of ink that trick the eye into seeing the original full spectrum of colors.

The color separation on this catalog cover is off, causing the skin tones to print entirely too yellow.
