Contone

adjectiveStandard termPrinting

Describing an image that features smooth, uninterrupted transitions between shades or colors.

A continuous-tone image, such as a traditional photograph, contains infinite variations of tone without being broken into dots or lines. Because standard printing presses can only deposit solid ink or leave the paper blank, these images must be converted into halftones using a screen before they can be reproduced on press.
