Bite

nounStandard termPrinting

A blank spot on a printed sheet caused by an obstruction between the type and the paper.

A printing defect where a section of the intended image fails to transfer to the paper because an object physically blocked the impression. In traditional handpress work, this usually happens when the frisket paper slips or is cut incorrectly, masking a portion of the live type form.

Heard on the job

The whole run has a bite on the top right corner because the frisket was taped too loose.
