Bearer

nounStandard termPrinting

A type-high strip of metal or wood used to support the printing pressure evenly.

A rigid strip or block placed around the edges of a type form or plate to bear the weight of the impression cylinder or platen. Bearers prevent the rollers from dipping into the blank spaces and over-inking the edges of the type, and they protect delicate elements from being crushed by taking the brunt of the mechanical pressure.

Lock a bearer into the chase on both sides of that delicate halftone so the platen doesn't smash it.
