Experienced sprayers learn which part numbers are gassy and plan around them with pre-bakes, special powders and hot flocking. The word covers porous die castings, bad welds and galvanizing with trapped moisture or a heavy zinc layer. Calling a substrate gassy shifts the blame away from the powder and the oven.
Those galv posts are gassy as heck, put them through the outgas bake before you even think about spraying.
Related terms
Outgassing
Gas escaping from a porous substrate during cure and blowing pinholes, bubbles or craters through the film.
Pre-bake
Heating a casting or galvanized part before coating to drive out trapped gas that would blow holes in the film.
Pinhole
A tiny hole running through the cured film, often down to bare metal.
Hot flocking
Spraying powder onto a part that is already hot, so the powder melts on contact and builds a thick film.
