This underground drainage pipe is manufactured by firing clay at high temperatures until it achieves a glass-like, impermeable state. It is highly valued in municipal sewer systems because it is inert and immune to the hydrogen sulfide gas that eats away concrete or cast iron. The pipe is joined using bell-and-spigot connections, which in older installations were packed with oakum and mortar.
We're tying the new ABS lateral into the old vitrified clay pipe out at the property line.
Older clay pipes are notorious for root blockages. Tree roots seek out the moisture that escapes from the mortar joints and eventually break the pipe apart.
