This architectural feature is built into the space between the raw rock wall of a shaft and its brick or concrete lining. It intercepts groundwater weeping from the strata and funnels it down to a collection ring or sump. Without these hidden channels, hydrostatic pressure could build up and eventually rupture the shaft lining.
