Sollar

nounStandard termMining

A wooden platform or landing stage built inside a mine shaft.

A structural platform installed at intervals within a vertical or steeply inclined mine shaft. Sollars serve as resting places between ladderways, catch platforms for falling debris, or transition points for changing direction. They divide the shaft into manageable sections and provide a safe footing for miners climbing in and out of the workings.

Heard on the job

Replace the rotting boards on the third sollar before the next shift goes down the ladderway.
