Sit

nounShop talkMining

A localized collapse or heavy settling of the mine roof.

A sit is a sudden or gradual subsidence of the roof strata in an underground mine, particularly in coal mining. It occurs when the overlying rock weight exceeds the strength of the pillars or artificial supports, causing the roof to sag or collapse into the worked-out area.
