Stank

verbShop talkMining

To build an airtight seal or dam to isolate an underground fire or flood.

The process of constructing a heavy, airtight barricade across a mine tunnel to choke off oxygen to a coal fire, or to hold back an influx of water or toxic gas. Stanking involves erecting thick walls of brick, concrete, or sandbags, often plastered with clay. Once an area is successfully stanked off, the fire will eventually consume all trapped oxygen and smother itself.

Heard on the job
