Blower

nounStandard termMining

A geological fissure in a coal mine that continuously emits explosive methane gas.

A blower is a pressurized crack or vent in the coal seam or surrounding strata that releases a steady stream of firedamp (methane). These gas emissions can last for days or even years, creating a severe and constant explosion hazard in underground collieries. Ventilation systems must be specifically designed to dilute the gas from a blower before it reaches explosive concentrations.

Heard on the job

The deputies flagged a new blower on the longwall face, so we're increasing the air flow to that district immediately.
