Fathomage

nounStandard termMining

A traditional payment system based on the cubic or linear fathoms of rock excavated.

A historic method of calculating miners' wages or contract rates by measuring the volume or length of ground they cleared, measured in fathoms. This piece-rate system encouraged rapid advancement but required precise surveying by the mine captain to ensure fair compensation for the ground conditions encountered.

Heard on the job

The crew complained that the fathomage rate was too low for driving through such hard granite.
