Azogue

nounShop talkMining

An old Spanish colonial mining term for mercury or silver ore suited for mercury amalgamation.

Azogue originally means mercury in Spanish, but in historic mining districts, it refers specifically to silver ores that are highly amenable to the patio process, where silver is extracted using mercury amalgamation. It distinguishes free-milling silver ores from those requiring smelting.

The upper levels of the vein are pure azogue, so we can process it quickly at the hacienda without building a smelter.
