Superduplex

nounStandard termMetallurgy

A highly alloyed stainless steel with an equal mix of austenite and ferrite for extreme corrosion resistance.

Superduplex stainless steel is engineered with high levels of chromium, molybdenum, and nitrogen to achieve exceptional pitting and crevice corrosion resistance. Its microstructure is carefully balanced to be half austenitic and half ferritic, yielding a metal that is significantly stronger than standard austenitic grades like 316. It is the standard choice for offshore oil platforms, desalination plants, and aggressive chemical processing.

Heard on the job

The chemical plant requires superduplex piping for the acid lines because standard stainless will pit in weeks.
