Superalloy

nounStandard termMetallurgy

A high-performance metal designed to retain exceptional mechanical strength and resist surface degradation at extreme temperatures.

A class of high-performance alloys specifically engineered for excellent mechanical strength, resistance to thermal creep deformation, and resistance to oxidation. They typically have a base alloying element of nickel, cobalt, or nickel-iron. These metals are heavily utilized in aerospace turbine engines and industrial gas turbines where operating temperatures approach the melting point of the material.

Heard on the job

The new turbine blades are cast from a nickel-based superalloy to handle the extreme exhaust temps.

Insider tip

When machining a superalloy, expect rapid tool wear and high cutting forces due to their tendency to work-harden immediately upon cutting.
