Sable iron

nounStandard termMetallurgy

A premium, historic grade of Russian sheet iron known for its flawless oxide finish.

This represents the highest quality of traditional Russia iron, originally stamped with a sable trademark by the Demidov family's Ural mountain ironworks. It features a highly polished, deep blue-black magnetite coating that resists flaking even when the sheet is bent. It set the standard for decorative and weather-resistant lagging.

Heard on the job

The original specs call for genuine Sable iron on the cylinder casings, but we'll have to use blued steel.
