Blooming takes a hot, freshly cast steel ingot and passes it back and forth through a heavy rolling mill to reduce its cross-section. This consolidates the porous cast structure and shapes the metal into a bloom, which is a thick rectangular bar ready for further rolling into billets or structural shapes.
