Manifold

nounStandard termMechanical

A pipe or chamber with multiple openings that distributes or gathers fluid.

A fluid routing component that connects one central source to multiple channels, or vice versa. In engines, an intake manifold distributes air to the cylinders while an exhaust manifold collects combustion gases into a single tailpipe. In hydraulics, a manifold block routes pressurized fluid between pumps, valves, and actuators.

Check the intake manifold for vacuum leaks before we tear down the top end.

Insider tip

Cast iron exhaust manifolds often crack from thermal cycling, while aluminum intake manifolds warp if torqued unevenly.
