Scroll

nounStandard termMechanical

A spiral-shaped casing or fluid passage surrounding a turbine or compressor rotor.

A volute or spiral housing that directs fluid into or out of a rotating impeller. The cross-sectional area gradually changes along the spiral path to maintain a uniform fluid velocity as it enters the runner or to convert kinetic energy into pressure as it exits. It is heavily used in centrifugal pumps, turbochargers, and Francis turbines.

Heard on the job
