Sidewinder

nounShop talkMaritime

A traditional commercial fishing trawler that hauls its nets over the side.

A sidewinder is an older style of deep-sea fishing vessel where the trawl net is deployed and recovered over the side of the hull rather than the stern. This design requires the crew to work on an open deck exposed to broadside waves, making it notoriously dangerous in heavy seas.

My grandfather spent twenty years working the deck on a sidewinder out of Hull.
