Tartan

nounStandard termMaritime

A traditional single-masted Mediterranean sailing vessel rigged with a large lateen sail.

A historic design of small coastal trading and fishing ship native to the Mediterranean Sea. It features a single mast carrying a massive triangular lateen sail and a bowsprit for a foresail. The lateen rig allowed the vessel to sail efficiently close to the wind in the variable breezes of the Mediterranean basin.
