In traditional wooden ship construction, the plank-sheer is the uppermost course of timber laid flat over the exposed heads of the vertical hull frames. It covers the gap between the inner and outer hull planking, sealing the timberheads from water intrusion and forming a solid base for the bulwarks or stanchions above.
