Shaving tool

nounStandard termMachine Shop

A cutting tool used to pare away a microscopic layer of material to finish a profile.

A specialized finishing tool that removes a very thin layer of metal from a previously machined or stamped surface. In stamping dies, a shaving operation cleans up the rough, fractured edges left by a blanking punch. In gear manufacturing, shaving tools refine the tooth profile and improve surface finish before heat treatment.

Heard on the job

The blanking die leaves too much tear-out on the edge, so we need to run it through a shaving tool to hold the dimensional tolerance.
