Shaper

nounStandard termMachine Shop

A traditional machine tool that cuts flat surfaces or slots using a reciprocating linear stroke.

A machine tool that drives a single-point cutting tool back and forth in a straight line while the workpiece advances sideways between strokes. Although largely replaced by milling machines for general flat work, they excel at cutting internal keyways, splines, and dovetails. The distinctive ram motion creates a rhythmic sound as the tool lifts or drags on the return stroke.

Heard on the job

We need to cut a blind internal keyway in this pulley, so go set it up on the shaper.

Insider tip

Because the cutting tool only removes material on the forward stroke, these machines are inherently slower than continuous rotary cutters like endmills.

Do not mix it up with

  • Slotter: A shaper cuts horizontally, while a slotter operates vertically.
