Transit agencies historically used roller blinds mounted above the windshield to display route numbers and destinations. The device consists of a long fabric or plastic sheet wound between two motorized or hand-cranked spools. While largely replaced by digital LED matrix signs, they are still maintained on heritage fleets and some older rail cars.
