Floor slang for a double-flank composite test, run on a simple roll tester at the machine or in final inspection. The gear is meshed tightly with a hardened master gear and turned by hand or motor while a dial or sensor watches center distance change. A roll check is fast enough to run on every part, catching handling nicks and burrs that a sample on the gear checker would miss.
Every gear gets a roll check before packing, a nick from the parts tub will show up as a jump on the dial.
